The Need:
Inner city areas and town centres have lost their traditional bustle with out-of-town hyper stores attracting 'all under one roof' shopping. By establishing Farmers' Markets in these areas customers are attracted back into the town centres to the benefit of the stores surrounding the markets.

Sheffield City Council had identified a need for a Farmers' Market but at that time a sustainable market had not been realised.

The Action:
Cynergy has a passionate belief in the principles and ethics of The National Association of Farmers' Markets. We therefore seek to help the development of ethical food producers which adhere to standards of production and supply directly to customers within a local area.

Cynergy took on the significant amount of work to research, provide guidance, publicise and schedule the first pilots in the City Centre of Sheffield, in October, November and December 2003. The pilots were enormously popular and Cynergy stayed on to run another two pilots to establish stability. The monthly operation of the Market was then passed to Sheffield City Council Markets Department.

The Star, Monday 27 October 2003 - from headline of Sheffield Farmers' Market article.

"We'll never buy from Supermarkets again, vow impressed shoppers."

"We would like to say how much we have enjoyed visiting the last two farmers markets on the Moor in Sheffield.

We received many emails following the initial Farmers' Markets and these are just a few examples:

This is exactly what the city centre needs: Quality produce sold ethically. An enjoyable outing and social occasion to put some fun back into shopping. And a reason for city centre shops to stay open and join in"

We hope it will become a regular event, monthly at least.

What a fantastic day!! Congratulations on a very successful first ever Sheffield Farmers' Market!!! So many happy and busy stall holders, with smiles ear to ear!

We really enjoyed our Cranberry & burgundy sausages, and handmade chocolates, and we want more please.

So many happy shoppers! Such a happy Cynthia! Well done that girl!

It has to be said that this was a labour of love and we are proud of this achievement.
